课程简介：This course looks at many different aspects of cinema to provide a wider understanding, knowledge and appreciation of film, including elements of genre, important international movements from 1920 to 1960, aspects of movies such as editing and musical scoring, historical background, film theory, and the role of cinema in society. The organisation of the course is THEMATIC, with a different topic each week. Classes will be in English, although film excerpts will have Chinese subtitles. Grades will be earned through attendance, presentations (each student will give one short presentation), and an exam. NOTE: This is a Film Studies course, not a Film Watching course, and is not in the format of “watch a whole movie one week, and talk about it the next week”. Notes will be provided for each lecture in PDF form. Students will be provided with a list of 100 Recommended Films as extension should they wish to pursue it. This course will include 153 separate film excerpts in 1080p HD to be shown during the lectures; students will have the option of in-class presentations or video presentations. Because of the extensive use of subtitles, it will be shown in the auditorium (lecture hall 221), presentation is through multimedia (avi-mp3-jpg-pdf-doc-web), and not ppt, which is of inferior audio-visual quality. Mobile phones are forbidden.
